The loud whine of an angle-grinder cutting through a corrugated iron fence is how residents were alerted to a police raid on a gang pad in their Napier neighbourhood. The Hawke's Bay armed offenders squad cut its way into the Ahuriri property, home to the local Outlaws Motorcycle Gang, on Saturday morning. A Bluff Hill resident alerted by the noise went to his window and saw about 11 police cars in the vicinity of the Kenny Ave property, as the squad smashed through the fence.

"They dragged a guy out and left him handcuffed on the footpath. He was there for 5-10 minutes before they got back to him," the man said.

"Then the AOS guys started banging down doors inside the property. You could hear these loud bangs. They obviously thought there were more people in there, but I'm not sure there were.

"It was all relatively quiet. It's only because we heard the cutting and thought 'what was that?' and looked out. I'm guessing they crept up on the place so as not to attract any attention or let anyone know they were coming."
Police found the victim of the alleged kidnapping a short distance from the property. The man, in his 20s, suffered serious injuries. He remained in Hawke's Bay Hospital in a stable condition on Sunday.
Two men were arrested at the scene. A third man was arrested in the Hastings suburb of Whakatu, near Clive. The men, aged 23, 31 and 39, have been jointly charged with kidnapping and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The alleged offenders are due to appear in the Napier District Court on Monday. No-one else was being sought in relation to the incident. The Outlaws registered themselves as an incorporated society in 1974 and have occupied the Ahuriri pad for about 30 years.
The high-fenced pad contains two properties on 2157 square metres of land, and is guarded by dogs and security cameras. Neighbours said the gang members caused no concern in the community.
